Donor Insemination
Donor Insemination (DI)?
Before proceeding with Donor Insemination (DI), it’s highly recommended — and often essential — to undergo counseling with a professional experienced in fertility and third-party reproduction. Here’s why:
Emotional Readiness: Counseling helps ensure that both partners (or the individual) are emotionally prepared to use donor sperm.
Open Communication: It provides a safe space to discuss questions, doubts, or emotional concerns related to infertility and the use of donor sperm.
Ethical & Moral Considerations: For some, DI may raise personal, ethical, or cultural questions. Counseling helps you explore and address these respectfully.
Decision Clarity: Helps couples or individuals work through decisions like:
What kind of donor to choose
Whether to share this journey with family or friends
Whether and how to tell the child about their conception
A thoughtful counseling session builds confidence, clears emotional blocks, and ensures mutual agreement and psychological readiness before starting the DI process.
How Do I Choose a Sperm Donor? Choosing a sperm donor is a deeply personal decision, and we’re here to support you throughout the process. Typically, patients are allowed to choose a sperm bank and select a donor based on the information available.
Donor Profile Information May Include: Physical Characteristics (height, eye color, skin tone, build)
Race & Ethnicity
Educational Background
Career History
Medical & Genetic History
Personal Traits (hobbies, personality)
Some sperm banks even offer non-identifiable photos and allow for future access to certain donor details by adult offspring.
Medical Screening of Donors To ensure the health and safety of the recipient and the future baby, all sperm donors undergo rigorous medical screening. This includes tests for:
HIV, Hepatitis B & C
Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia
Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
Streptococcal species and Trichomonas
Presence of white blood cells in semen, which could indicate an infection
Only sperm from thoroughly screened, healthy donors is cleared for use in fertility treatments.
A Thoughtful Start to Your Parenthood Journey Whether you’re a couple or a single individual, Donor Insemination can be a beautiful and fulfilling path to parenthood. Taking the time for counseling and informed donor selection ensures that your journey begins with confidence, clarity, and care.
